ENVIRONMENTAL (WALES) ACT 2016, PART 1 – SECTION 6 – BIODIVERSITY REPORT 2025

Section 6 of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 requires town and community councils to maintain and enhance biodiversity and promote the resilience of ecosystems. Read our Biodiversity Report covering the period April 2022 to March 2025 to see how the Town Council has complied with its Section 6 duty. The Council manages land and buildings and provides a range of services to the local community that have an impact on biodiversity, presenting opportunities to protect and enhance biodiversity locally. This includes several green spaces, including cemeteries, that are managed and maintained by staff and, where appropriate, external contractors at certain times of the year.

Bridge Meadow

Bridge Meadow is a play area and riverside walk upstream from the Gorsedd Circle and is managed by the Bridge Meadow Trust Haverfordwest, of which Haverfordwest Town Council is the sole Trustee.  The Trust provides land and facilities for sport and recreational activities for the community of Haverfordwest.

Community Garden

Havergardd

The community garden is located on an old gasworks site near the river in Haverfordwest.  Funded by the National Lottery the Town Council has been able to create a community space with a polytunnel, raised beds, wildflower area, composting toilet, fruit trees etc.   Volunteers have been instrumental in the project helping with the set up and progress of the project. The garden is now thriving and is managed by Grwp Resilience.

Priory Saltings

Havergardd

The Priory Saltings Nature Reserve was originally a low-lying marshland on the river.  Once the town’s rubbish tip it has been greened over in recent years and is now managed by the Town Council for the benefit and enjoyment of local people with an aim to increase biodiversity on a site so close to the town centre.   Work is ongoing to maintain and enhance this area with collaboration from Pembrokeshire County Council.
